Originally published in 1811, was the island of Java, the very first common book in English to describe what was for centuries the primary island in the vast Indonesian archipelago. The book had a lot of popularity and is speedily passed to a second edition. Detailed descriptions are given of Java ecology, history and culture, such as strategies of tribute and taxes used by Dutch settlers and the style of fortifications around Batavia.
