With the growing number of images obtainable electronically, the automated search systems are increasingly important. This book introduces a sine qua non for such a method: a measure referred to as the Earth Mover Distance (EMD), to compare the images with respect to their appearance. These statistics describe the quantity of work required to transform one image to yet another in a certain mathematical sense, and a flexible and perceptually substantial. An effective linear programming algorithm allows the calculation of this measure rapidly enough to be used for interactive search of significant image repositories. The perceptual characteristics of the EMD, and the speed of their calculation results in navigation database, a new paradigm of interaction with a repository of images.
