After the death of his mother, Alyse Myers covets only 1 thing: a wooden box located in the bottom of a closet. Its content has been kept throughout his life. When she was thirteen, her mother promised she could have the box “when I am dead. In reality, it will be my gift to you.” Growing up in Queens in the 1960s and ’70s, Alyse often wished for a lot more of life, while his mother was settled for an unhappy marriage, an unsatisfactory performance, and ultimately a joyless existence. His father runs in and out of his house. There are fights excruciating, extreme cruelty, and endless uncertainty. Throughout her childhood Alyse adamantly rejects everything way of life of his mother, leaving his mother to ask, “Who do you think you are?” A by Who Do You Believe You Are?: A Memoir
